Homeostasis & Negative Feedback — Edexcel A-Level Biology

Edexcel A-Level Biology

Homeostasis is the maintenance of a constant internal environment — a central concept in Edexcel A-Level Biology (Topic 7). This interactive tool models negative feedback loops for blood glucose regulation (insulin and glucagon), thermoregulation (vasodilation, vasoconstriction, shivering, sweating), and osmoregulation (ADH and the kidney). Adjust variables and watch the feedback system respond in real time. Includes exam-style scenarios and structured evaluation prompts aligned to Edexcel mark schemes.

Uses Google Fonts (Lora, Outfit). Requires an internet connection for full styling.

Frequently asked questions

What is negative feedback in biology?+
Negative feedback is a control mechanism where a change in a physiological variable triggers a response that reverses the change and returns the variable to its set point. For example, when blood glucose rises after a meal, the pancreas releases insulin to lower it back to normal.
How does ADH control water balance?+
ADH (antidiuretic hormone) is released by the posterior pituitary gland when blood water potential falls. ADH increases the permeability of the collecting duct walls in the kidney, allowing more water to be reabsorbed by osmosis. This produces a smaller volume of more concentrated urine.
